Indemnity Only: first half

Unlike many of the stories we read so far in the class, I think Sarah Paretsky’s main character, V.I. Warshawski, stands out from the bunch. Warshawki character is highly developed and easily relatable to the audience. In previous harboiled stories, … Continue reading Continue reading

What does he get out of this?

Good question. I’m doing this totally for fun. I love hardboiled detective stories and film noir – it’s something I’ve been into for more than twenty years. But if I wasn’t playing along with this course, my only reading would … Continue reading Continue reading

Yes, yes, yes….

Sure, sure, sure…..How women character in Detective fiction changed, now she is not femme fatal only, but a detective as well. Hmmm…..Trying to understand the roots of it… Defiantly gender of a writer. We, men never can fully understand what really … Continue reading Continue reading

We love you V.I.!!

I would have to say that my favorite part of Indemnity Only occurs somewhat in the middle, and it is when Vic tells Jill’s family to back off and not be so spoiled.  In my book it is page 175, … Continue reading Continue reading

Snaps for Vic

Overall, I was very pleased by Indemnity Only. I loved all of the courageous female characters, including Jill and Anita, who really knew how to hold their own. It was nice to have a female lead for a change, especially … Continue reading Continue reading

One Tough Cookie

Warshawski is one of the toughest women that I ever read in a book other than the ones that I read in graphic novels. This was a very big event that happened in the 1980s and is one that would be forever remember in the history books. “Our future lies with today’s kids and tomorrow’s space exploration.” -Sally Ride Continue reading

You people are so hostile that it starts me wondering.

Working up to when Indemnity Only was written, the Equal Rights Amendment was on the brink of either being passed or denied.  This would have given full voting rights to everyone, no matter the gender, so it most likely effected … Continue reading Continue reading

Those were different times

Looking at the popular reception of some of these books back when they were published is kind of fun in a way because it sometimes shows them in a different light. We look at Mildred Pierce and see a hardworking … Continue reading Continue reading

A step closer to the 21st Century

I do like the idea of a female P.I. It changes things up form what we have been reading so far and its nice to see the hardboiled genre from a woman’s point of view. With that out of the way, I thought the book to be annoying in some places. For example, V.I. gets […] Continue reading
