Final Paper

I was having issues with my brother’s laptop (especially Microsoft which froze on me) while I was trying to upload my paper so I had to edit the rough draft post :/ Jessica Martinez U.S. Hardboiled detective Research paper draft December 14, 2012 For this paper, my topic will be on the characters of “Indemnity Only” by Sara Paretsky since I contributed mostly to that section. As I read the book and met new characters along the way I’ve come to meet characters like V. I. Warshawski, Ralph, Lotty, and other characters as the story went further in. I’ve noticed that not all the characters are the same and all … Continue reading Continue reading

Devil in a blue dress

“Easy, walk out your door in the morning and you’re mixed up in something. The only thing you can really worry about is if you get mixed up to the top or not.” I thought I should quote this sentence that Mr. Albright says to Easy from page 64 because it just gets to me as something powerful (well, not that powerful) and it makes you think that life has that black and white feeling to it. Another thing that I like from this book is how its easier to read compared to the other Hard boiled books we’ve read in class so far. Its a really great book and … Continue reading Continue reading

Elizabeth Short

I looked up more on The Black Dahlia and found out there was someone given that nickname and it was an actually case that was never solved. It makes the book more interesting now and I wonder how the author will end it…I can’t wait to read more!! Continue reading

One Tough Cookie

Warshawski is one of the toughest women that I ever read in a book other than the ones that I read in graphic novels. She is the type who can hold her own in a fight and is very sarcastic when talking to people, authority or not. she doesn’t seem to care what happens to her as long as she gets the job done. 80s Cultural Event

Sally Ride was the first woman to go into space on June 18, 1983 and is seen as one of the great role models for a lot of women then and now. She also helped changed the roles of women in that day and showed that they could do anything and weren’t limited to only a few things. This was a very big event that happened in the 1980s and is one that would be forever remember in the history books. “Our future lies with today’s kids and tomorrow’s space exploration.” -Sally Ride Continue reading

Vietnam War

This event is one of the wars that affected the United States and also the youth of that time. The fact that the war had caused such an uproar on college campus and most protests became violent as police forces and protestors butted head against each o… Continue reading

Bizarre police report of the 1960s

Shot to death by a hunting buddy during a drunken brawl over a $50 debt at the age of 33. Believe it or not, police ruled the slaying a “justifiable homicide.” It may not be as violent or crazy like the ones that are in Cotton Comes To Harlem but it still is bizarre that his own friend would kill him over $50. And the fact that the police said it was a justified homicide is really insane to me. Continue reading

There’s a lot of humor…

The major difference between the book and the movie was that, there was a lot of humor in the movie than I felt there was in the book. Also, the violence was much less than in the book as well. They also cut out and shorten a few things too, like with the fight between Mabel and Iris, where instead of a gun, she uses a miniature ship to hit her in the head. And there is quite a lot of scenes taken out, like when they go eat out and the scene where they find the dead junkyard employee and the poisoned dog. But most of the things taken … Continue reading Continue reading

These people…

As I started reading, I got to the part where there’s a church service and Reverend Washington is giving a sermon. He goes on and saying how Deke was innocent and should be set free. Even after the news have been out that he wasn’t really what he seemed, people in Harlem still think he’s innocent. “I know Reverend O’Malley is innocent of any crime,” Reverend Washington said loudly, letting passion creep into the solemnity of his voice. “I would trust him with my money and I would trust him with my life.” “Amen,” the sister shouted, rising from her seat. “He’s a good man.” ….Are these people stupid? Did … Continue reading Continue reading

YEAHHH!

“Nothing ever spoils,” Henry said and got out, putting on his dark glasses at the same time. When i read this sentence, it made me think of this guy: (The meme had nothing to do with the post, I just wanted to find a decent one…) Wow. Iris is like a female fatale in this book! So far, she told the detectives that Deke had killed Mabel and told them about that the Back to Africa movement was crooked, just to get revenge on Deke for cheating on her. Pretty cunning she is.
